Job Introduction
General Instructor role at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service Learning and Development Department
An opportunity has arisen to join the Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Learning and Development department as a General Instructors.
We are seeking instructors to deliver and support the variety of operational training we offer in-house, such as initial Recruits, Specialist Rescue, Live Fire, Incident Command, Projects, IECR, Apprenticeship and Development.
All General Instructors need to maintain their operational competencies by carrying out a duty shift at one of our stations once a month.
Please note at current we are only seeking those who hold competency in response firefighting.
All General Instructors are expected to hold an Instructing and Teaching qualification, and an Assessor qualification. For internal Surrey Fire and Rescue staff who don’t have these, we will support and develop you to obtain this.
Annual Leave
28 days Annual leave raising to 31 days with long service (5 years) and 8 Public Holidays.
About the team
Surrey Fire and Rescue Learning and Development team design, deliver and assess training to all staff members to ensure competence in role is achieved in the varying subjects and vocational education needed in the Fire sector.
About the Role
You will be based at Wray Park Training Centre, Reigate and will deliver training both from the centre and across any of SFRS Fire Stations
You will become a multi-skilled Instructor, covering a plethora of subjects and will lead on a specific subject. You will be responsible for the research, development, and delivery of all learning materials for your subject area, including maintaining the standards of other instructors.
As this role is of an operational nature, working a 42-hour week in line with nationally agreed conditions, where flexibility is required for some evening and weekend working
This role attracts an additional 10% enhancement due to the flexible nature of the role.
You will be expected to maintain competence in operational duties associated with your substantive role by riding across any of SFRS's Fire Stations at least once per month. This will be at the Substantive Rank that you hold.

To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
EXTERNAL Interest is accepted for competent Firefighters (FF), Crew Commanders (CC), and Watch Commanders (WC), who have Instructing (PTLLS or Level 3 award in Education and Training), Assessor (CAVA or A1 full assessors award) and Instructing qualifications and experience in the Fire Service.
This role will be paid at Watch Commander B rate (£48,202) plus 10%.
This role is subject to Standard Disclosure and Barring Service Check. Appointment will be subject to satisfactory medical, fitness assessment, references and competency review.
You will maintain your substantive rank and have the opportunity to develop and be substantively promoted whilst in the Learning and Development team.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to design and deliver at the interview a 10-Minute PowerPoint presentation aimed at Recruit Firefighters on any subject Fire or Non-Fire related that you feel would benefit a Recruit Fire Fighter.
INTERNAL SFRS interest is accepted for competent Firefighters (FF), Crew Commanders (CC) and Watch Commanders (WC). Any candidate who does not hold an Instructing (PTLLS or Level 3 award in Education and Training) and/or Assessors (CAVA or A1 full assessors award) qualification, will be supported and developed to obtain these. There is also the opportunity for a 12-month secondment or permanent post.
This role will be paid at Watch Commander B rate (£48,202) plus 10%, if already a competent WC or have successfully achieved an Instructor (PTLLS or Level 3 award in Education and Training), Assessor (CAVA or A1 full assessors award) and Instructing qualifications, Prior to this, the role will be paid at Watch Commander Development rate (£44,038) plus 10%.
You will maintain your substantive rank and have the opportunity to develop and be substantively promoted whilst in the Learning and Development team.
