Surrey Fire and Rescue Service provide an emergency service that looks after approximately 1.18 million people spread across approximately 1,676 square kilometres in a county that includes several large urban areas such as Guildford, Redhill, and Woking. Surrey has also been found to have the highest concentration of trees in the UK. There are 103 kilometres of motorway, two major airports nearby and there are more than 1000 sites identified as posing high risk throughout the county.
Surrey's firefighters are trained to deal with a range of emergency situations, not just fires and road traffic collisions. These activities include working with other agencies to respond to widespread flooding and other water rescue incidents or dealing with emergencies that may involve hazardous materials.
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Engineering Technician to join our workshop team based in Reigate. Working as part of a team of two engineers and reporting to the Workshop Technical Charge Hand, the post holder will carry out repairs, inspections and maintenance to laid‑down standards, working without direct supervision while remaining an active and collaborative team member.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out repair, maintenance and inspection work on fire service equipment and machinery in accordance with agreed standards
- Undertake on station inspections of equipment where required
- Ensure all operational equipment is maintained to protect fire crews and the public
- Support emergency response capability by maintaining fleet and equipment availability
- Be prepared to work additional hours during emergencies within Surrey or surrounding regions
- Travel and work at locations across Surrey when required (normally based in Reigate workshop)
- Support the Service’s apprentice programme, assisting with training and the transfer of technical knowledge
Specialist Duties and Qualifications (Achieved or Willing to Achieve)
The post holder will be required to obtain and maintain qualifications to support operational readiness, including but not limited to:
- Working at Height equipment servicing and repairs
- LOLER inspections
- PAT testing of all vehicles and equipment
- Gas detector calibration
- Breathing apparatus equipment repairs
- Firefighting equipment Inspections, servicing, testing and repairs.
- Air quality testing
- Ladder inspection, servicing and testing
- Driving qualifications for Moffett forklifts and counterbalance forklifts
- Dry suit inspection and repair
- Maintenance of road traffic collision equipment, including hydraulic high‑pressure systems
To be shortlisted to interview for this position your application will clearly evidence:
Qualifications
- Full clean UK driving licence Cat B minimum, no previous driving disqualifications.
Experience
- Experience of conducting routine engineering inspections and servicing on equipment/machinery to ensure they are compliant, safe, and ready to use.
- Experience of working as part of a small team and under own initiative.
- Experience liaising with internal and external clients to resolve issues satisfactorily.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Appreciation of good customer care practices and excellent communication skills.
- The ability to apply a knowledge of health and safety as it is applicable to the job role.
- To be able to work flexibly in line with workloads and operational demands.
- Exceptional knowledge of Surrey geography and major road layout.
- Can work with accuracy, plan and prioritise work with the ability to adapt to changing situations and competence in general office IT tools such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Have knowledge of manual handling regulations and confidence in safe manual handling procedures.
